OVERVIEW
What is Talulah? βοΈ
Talulah is a digital platform for aspiring pilots that streamlines the process of learning to fly. It's mission is to make aviation more structured & accessible. I worked with Bunky last semester through USC's Innovative Design to bring to life the initial vision from 0 to 1.

THE PROBLEM
80% of students who begin learning to fly never obtain their license.
Learning to fly is a disorganized and confusing process. Between documents, lesson feedback, and physical flight logs, the current system's lack of structure causes aspiring pilots to lose sense of their goal.
So, we asked ourselves:
How might we transform flight education into a more organized & motivating experience?
RESEARCH
Breaking down and understanding the problem space
Our first challenge was understanding the existing issues with flight training. We researched the process, analyzed gaps in existing tools, and spoke with student pilots.

A PEEK INTO OUR GOOGLE DRIVEβ¦
The main paint points we identified were:
Lack of progress visibility π
This causes students to feel discouraged and lose sight of their goal.
Fragmented tools ποΈ
It's difficult to keep track of everything- lesson scheduling, flight logs, textbooks, and necessary documents.
Unstructured learning π
Flight education lacks organized and engaging learning materials.

SOLUTION
A structured & engaging learning platform for student pilots
After iterating on our low-fidelity screens, we transformed them into a high-fidelity prototype with a cohesive design system. Here's a quick look at our end-to-end solution for modernizing flight training:

Student Dashboard
Students can immediately see information on their next lesson, such as their date/time/instructor/etc. and the tasks they need to complete beforehand (Pre-flight and Post-flight tasks). The right sidebar also display a calendar with scheduled flights, and a metric summary from the last flight.

PROCESS
Collaborating to create a comprehensive sitemap
Our team worked together to create an extensive sitemap of a cohesive digital experience that solves these problems. This sitemap serves as the foundation of Talulah: a platform where student pilots can view their lesson calendar, flight history, pre-flight preparations, and learning modulesβ all in one place.
Gathering inspiration from other learning platforms
We analyzed popular learning platforms like Duolingo, Khan Academy, and Quizlet. Then, we discussed what features made these tools feel organized, effective, & motivating.
Lo-Fidelity Wireframes
Then, we used our sitemap to create initial designs of each page. During this phase, we explored various layouts and ways of sectioning each page.
Learning Modules
Inside the learning tab, students can access learning modules that prepare them to succeed before their flight lessons. Lesson modules are organized (by topic), interactive to keep users engaged, and include clear progress visualization to keep users motivated.
Flight Log
Talulah features a digital flight log for students to record their past flights in an organized, centralized manner. The flight log also includes a quick view of recent instructor feedback and various progress visualizations (like streaks and badges).
TAKEAWAYS
Don't be intimidated by unfamiliar topics
This project taught me how to deconstruct an unfamiliar subject. By asking specific and thoguthful questions, I was able to build a clearer understanding of the flight education space.
Early planning reduces downstream work
This project helped reinforce the importance of planning head. I learned to site map the structure/content first instead of jumping straight into prototyping.
